Qualitative Assessment

Johns Hopkins University, Bloomberg School of Public Health, Institute of International Programs, Ethiopia; Qualitative assessment of factors limiting care seeking for sick children from community-based health workers in Oromia region, Ethiopia (December 2012 - January 2013):

The objective of the study was to understand factors limiting care seeking for sick children from the government-supported cadre of Health Extension Workers (HEWs) in rural Ethiopia. Utilization of prompt and appropriate care for common childhood illnesses (diarrhea, malaria, and pneumonia) had been low in Oromia. Evidence indicated that this contributed to high rates of child mortality. However, few studies had qualitatively explored care-seeking processes and barriers to the utilization of prompt and appropriate care from HEWs in Ethiopia.
